Scenario 22 — Transport and mobility: public transport, bicycle, car‑sharing, driving licence (180’)

BNB4UR package • Group: 18–30 • 180 minutes • 15–20 participants • Language: English • Format: in‑person

UWAGA
Note: this is an educational workshop, not legal advice. Operators’ rules, reduced‑fare tickets and driving‑licence exchange procedures differ locally and may change — participants verify details in official sources. In exercises we use fictional data and mock‑ups.

1. Overall goal and workshop logic

Goal: participants can choose and plan the most beneficial way to get around (public transport/bicycle/micromobility/car‑sharing), read a timetable and buy a ticket (machine/app), know basic safety rules for cyclists and scooters, understand key car‑rental terms, and create a 30‑day mobility plan (cost, time, safety).

Logic: route mapping → public transport (reading timetables/tickets) → apps and ticket machines (role‑play) → bicycle and micromobility (rules) → car‑sharing/rental (checklists) → driving licence: pathway and questions for offices → 30‑day plan and KPIs.

Final outputs:

  • TR1 — My routes (home–work/university/NGO/clinic).
  • TR2 — Public transport: timetable + tickets (checklist).
  • TR3 — Ticket machine: “step by step” (mock‑up).
  • TR4 — Buying a ticket in an app (mock‑up + safety).
  • TR5 — Bike and scooter: rules and equipment (poster + checklist).
  • TR6 — Car‑sharing/car rental: checklist + condition report.
  • TR7 — Decision calculator (time/cost/comfort/CO₂).
  • TR8 — Driving licence: pathway and questions for offices (verify locally).
  • TR9 — 30‑day mobility plan (3 steps and KPIs).
  • TR‑R — Outcomes rubric.

2. Learning outcomes (knowledge • skills • attitudes)

Knowledge: knows the differences between single‑ride/time‑based/season tickets, understands validation and ticket inspections, knows the minimum equipment and right‑of‑way/lights rules for cyclists and scooters; understands key car‑rental terms (deposit, km limit, damage, fuel, condition report).

Skills:

  • reads a timetable (stop/line/direction) and plans 2 alternative routes;
  • buys a ticket in a machine and in an app (on mock‑ups) and knows safe payment practices;
  • chooses and prepares cycling equipment and a route (safe ride);
  • fills in a condition report for car‑sharing/rental;
  • creates a 30‑day mobility plan with 3 indicators.

Attitudes: safety > speed, respecting rules, ecological and cost‑aware thinking.

3. Organisational parameters

Room: U‑shape seating + 4 tables; 2 flipcharts; projector; timer.

Materials (A4/A3, 1 per person): TR1–TR9, TR‑R; mock‑ups: stop timetable, ticket‑machine screen, ticket‑app screen, car‑sharing screen; pictogram set (bike/scooter/bus).

Evaluation: Mentimeter PRE/POST (3 questions – section 4) + TR‑R rubric.

4. Mentimeter — questions (PRE and POST)

“I can plan a route (at least 2 options) and buy a ticket safely.”

“I know the rules for safe cycling/scooter riding in the city.”

“I can assess the costs/risks of car‑sharing/rental and I have a 30‑day plan.”

5. Detailed agenda (180’)

0–12’
Otwarcie i zasady (12’)

Goal: safety and expectations.

Instruction: goals/outputs; rules: voluntary participation, right to pause, no sharing of account/app data. Hand out TR1–TR9.

12–22’
Icebreaker “My everyday route” (10’)

Goal: anchor the topic in real needs.

Instruction: on TR1 draw your 2 most common routes (home–work/university, home–clinic/NGO) and your current mode of transport.

22–30’
Mentimeter PRE (8’)
30–65’
MODULE 1 — Public transport: timetable, tickets, inspection (35’)

Goal: use city transport with confidence.

Materials: TR2, timetable mock‑up and line maps.

How to read a timetable: line number, direction (last stop), day columns (weekday/weekend/holiday), pictograms (low‑floor, bicycle, night).

Ticket types: single ride, time‑based (e.g., 15/30/60 min — examples without prices), season tickets (monthly/weekly, for lines/zones).

Validation/activation: when to validate/activate, where in the machine, what the screen shows.

Inspection: ticket proof (paper/app), what to do during an inspection; stay calm, do not pay cash “in a rush” without a receipt; check appeal channels in the operator’s rules.

Exercise (12’): in groups of three, read 2 alternative routes from the mock‑up (time/1 transfer vs 0 transfers) and record the result in TR7 (time/cost/comfort).

65–95’
MODULE 2 — Ticket machine and app (role‑play) (30’)

Goal: practise step‑by‑step purchasing and payment safety.

Materials: TR3 (machine), TR4 (app), screen mock‑ups.

Ticket machine (10’): choose zone/time, number of tickets, pay by card/cash, print and check; malfunction: keep the receipt and report via the hotline (on the sticker).

App (10’): registration, add a card, activate the ticket before boarding/before inspection; set a screen lock; safety (don’t click links from SMS/messengers — open the app directly; bridge to scenario 15).

Role‑play (10’): pairs A/B: A buys a ticket (machine or app), B is the “stress helper” and reads the TR4 checklist.

Kryterium: poprawnie wykonany zakup i zapisany screen potwierdzenia (na makiecie).

95–105’
PRZERWA (10’)
105–135’
MODULE 3 — Bicycle and micromobility (scooter) (30’)

Goal: safe movement around the city.

Materials: TR5 (poster + checklist), sign pictograms.

Bicycle equipment: working lights (front/white, rear/red), reflector, brakes; helmet recommended; U‑lock/chain; bell.

Scooter: caution rules, speed limits per local regulations (to be verified), pedestrians’ right of way at crossings, follow local signage.

Where to ride: cycle path → bike lane → roadway; sidewalk only according to local rules and with pedestrian priority.

Visibility and weather: vest/reflectors; rain/slippery surface — increase braking distance; phone in your pocket, not in your hand.

Exercise (12’): using TR5, prepare a “readiness kit” for daily commuting (8‑item list + route sketch).

Kryterium: kompletny TR5 + szkic trasy alternatywnej.

135–160’
MODULE 4 — Car‑sharing and car rental (25’)

Goal: understand costs/risks and documentation.

Materials: TR6 (checklist + condition report), app mock‑up; TR7 (calculator).

Terms: age/minimum licence holding period (check with operator), deposit, payment methods, price list (minutes/km/parking), extra fees (fuel/wash/fines/zone).

Before starting: walk around the car, take photos of corners/wheels/interior/fuel gauge/damages, complete TR6; check mandatory equipment; set navigation before driving.

Finish: park in an allowed zone, take final photos, check the car is locked; end the rental in the app and keep the confirmation.

Compare with taxi/public transport: use TR7 (time/cost/comfort/CO₂).

Exercise (10’): in groups of three compare 3 travel options using TR7 and choose a recommendation (justify it).

160–172’
MODULE 5 — Driving licence: pathway and questions for offices (12’)

Goal: prepare a list of questions and documents for local verification.

Materials: TR8 (pathway/questions).

Instruction: discuss 3 scenarios in general: (1) I have a licence from my home country — check use and exchange in Poland; (2) I don’t have a licence — course/exam/medical steps; (3) international driving — ask about insurance at the rental company.

Exercise (8’): complete TR8: office/institution, documents (translations? photos? certificates), fees, deadlines, questions for phone/email.

Criterion: everyone has a list of questions and contacts to verify.

172–178’
Mentimeter POST + Plan 30 dni (6’)

Goal: wrap up and implement.

Instruction: POST (the same 3 questions). In TR9 write 3 steps/30 days and define KPIs: number of public‑transport/bike trips, % sticking to budget, commute time.

178–180’
Closing (2’)

Instruction: take photos of flipcharts and cards (no personal data), reminder: road safety and cyber‑safety in apps (no links from SMS; bridge to scenario 15).

6. Good facilitation practices

Use simple language (A2–B2) and pictograms; avoid jargon; demonstrate everything on mock‑ups.

Safety: we don’t use real accounts or cards; we practise “offline”; on the road, life and health always come first.

Cultural inclusion: don’t assume knowledge of Polish customs; explain gestures/signals.

Bridges: scenario 14 (budget), 15 (cyber), 20 (health — commuting), 18 (B2B — commuting costs).

7. Adaptations, Plan B, variants

Language barrier: TR2–TR4 and TR5 versions with pictograms and PL↔UA phrases; mixed‑language pairs.

Small group (≤10): more rounds at the machine/app; optional field walk‑through.

Less time (120’): M1 25’, M2 20’, M3 20’, M4 20’, M5 15’; TR9 as homework.

More time (+30’): add a mini‑module “city bike” (registration/docking) and “metropolitan tickets” (where to check).

8. Evaluation and reporting indicators

Mentimeter PRE/POST — 3 questions.

Outputs: TR1–TR9 (photo/scan).

TR‑R rubric (0–2 points per criterion, max 10):

  • Dwie alternatywne trasy i decyzja (M1),
  • Ticket purchase on a mock‑up (M2),
  • Bike/scooter checklist (M3),
  • TR6 report + TR7 calculation (M4),
  • TR9 — 30‑day plan and KPIs.
